BEYOND THE CRISIS - NEW CHALLENGES FOR CORPORATE GOVERNANCE
Recent decades have brought rapid development of corporate governance norms and regulation. Still, when the crisis hit the global markets this did not seem to be of much help. Instead, the financial turmoil and the ensuing downturn of the world economy have uncovered crucial flaws in what were believed to be fairly robust corporate governance systems.
This conference will highlight some key issues arising from this experience, taking a forward-looking approach to the challenges facing European corporate governance in the wake of the crisis:
-        What are the main findings of the 2009 European Commission study on implementation and effectiveness of corporate governance regulation in the European Union? How can these be used to disseminate best practice among the Member States?
-        Demands for stricter regulation of remuneration of directors and top-level executives are widespread in the aftermath of the crisis. To what extent – and how - should this be accomplished within the European Union? What are the pros and cons of regulating executive remuneration and what methods are the most appropriate?
-        Another outcome of the crisis is governments assuming control – through ownership and other means - of major players in the financial markets and other industries. How should governments exercise their control? What are their exit strategies? What are the long-term implications of this development for the market economy as a whole?
